Spring is the best time to catch the damage winter left behind. A few hours of checks now can prevent expensive repairs in summer.

Start at the top. Look at your roof from the ground for missing or lifted shingles, then clear gutters and downspouts so spring rain drains away from your foundation.

Next, book an AC tune-up before the first heatwave. Technicians are easier to schedule in spring, and a clean system uses less energy all summer.

Inside, check under sinks for slow leaks, test your water heater's pressure relief valve and look for signs of pests around doors and windows as insects become active again.
